Emergency Lighting Standard
In Australia, emergency lighting systems are dictated by the law. The AS/NZS2293 standard “Emergency Lighting for Buildings” outlines the current requirements regarding the installation, maintenance, and performance of emergency luminaires in commercial buildings.
According to this standard, your emergency lighting requirements are as follows:
- All emergency lights must undergo a 90-minute battery discharge test at least once every 6 months.
- Every 12 months, the system must undergo all the same checks as a 6-monthly inspection plus an assessment/cleaning of the fittings and reflective surfaces.
- Any faulty lamps must be replaced during the 6-monthly inspection. We can replace your lamps with energy efficient LED globes.
- Emergency light battery replacements can be installed where a fault is detected.
In order to ensure compliance, all Kerfoot electricians monitor any changes to the current standard. We’ll make sure your lights are maintained to the correct specifications and keep you informed if there are any changes between services.
Clear communication and sustained support are guaranteed when you work with a Kerfoot electrician.
Why is emergency light testing important?
If you are a business owner, you have an obligation to provide your staff members and guests with a safe environment. Emergency luminaries are integral during a mains supplied power outage. The lights kick in (or continue to work) when the power fails.
This means that the people in your building will have an illuminated exit passage during an emergency. It also means minimal confusion and disruption to work during a power outage.
Complying with the national building standards will help you avoid serious ramifications if an accident occurs in your building. If you can prove that you have done everything in your power to ensure safety in your building, the chances of receiving a penalty are significantly minimised.
When we complete testing on your property, you will receive an emergency light test certificate that documents the complete inspection and results. We can create a unique programmed preventative maintenance schedule (PPM) that includes a re-test date for your emergency lighting system. We can notify you of scheduled maintenance so that your organisation remains compliant at all times.
You can add an additional range of services to your PPM schedule, including RCD testing, testing and tagging of electrical equipment, and infrared thermographic scanning. With a proactive plan in place, you can prevent safety issues within your organisation.
