Project Description:
The upgrade introduces 15 new CT screening lanes, allowing passengers to keep liquids, aerosols and laptops in their bags. This not only strengthens security but also improves efficiency, increasing capacity by around 30% and helping most passengers move through in under 10 minutes.
The space itself has also had a complete transformation. Security has been relocated ahead of passport control to improve flow, with the new layout creating a more seamless and intuitive passenger journey. The refreshed screening hall now offers a calmer environment, improved acoustics, and over 300m² of additional retail space.
Delivered within a live airport environment, the works were carefully staged to keep everything running without disruption. Across arrivals, departures and ramp areas, the project included major electrical upgrades, new submains, communications rooms, and the integration of advanced screening technology, along with key architectural finishes.
From a Kerfoot perspective, our team delivered the full electrical services package, covering everything from temporary power and lighting through to distribution boards, UPS systems and critical power infrastructure. We also delivered lighting, controls, power to screening equipment, AV, security systems, wayfinding, and supporting infrastructure.
A key highlight was the level of system integration, working across SAGE Automation, Airport Management Systems, and interfaces with Honeywell and BMS platforms to ensure everything operates seamlessly behind the scenes.
Specific items within the scope of this project were:
- Delivered across multiple stages within a live airport environment, maintaining full operations throughout
- Safe disconnection, demolition and modification of existing electrical services
- Installation of temporary power, lighting and exit signage to support staged works
- Upgrade and installation of key electrical infrastructure, including distribution boards, UPS systems and critical power supplies
- New submains, cabling and reticulation installed across arrivals, departures and ramp areas
- Installation of cable containment systems, supports and coordinated routing within congested ceiling spaces
- Delivery of new lighting, lighting controls and emergency lighting systems throughout the upgraded areas
- Provision of general power to screening equipment, security systems, AV, communications and airport infrastructure
- Integration with key systems including Airport Management Systems, BMS and security platforms
- Electrical works supporting mechanical systems, fire protection and other essential services
- Completion of testing, commissioning, compliance and final handover of all systems
Project Accolade:
- Delivered a complex electrical services upgrade within a fully operational international terminal, maintaining critical airport and Australian Border Force operations throughout the works.
- Successfully completed the project across eight carefully staged phases, with major works undertaken within restricted 11pm–4am nightly work windows to minimise disruption to passenger operations.
- Designed and integrated UPS-backed critical power infrastructure with N+1 redundancy, providing resilient power to Australian Border Force security and screening systems.
- Successfully delivered high-risk electrical changeovers and integration into existing live substations, supported by detailed staging, temporary power and continuity planning.
- Integrated electrical infrastructure supporting 15 advanced CT screening lanes, contributing to an approximately 30% increase in passenger screening capacity from 4,500 to 5,850 passengers per hour.
- Coordinated complex interfaces across CT scanners, communications, security, BMS, Airport Management Systems, SCADA and Honeywell platforms, delivering seamless integration within a high-security environment.
- Developed innovative reticulation and installation solutions within highly congested ceiling spaces, reducing demolition, construction waste and disruption to terminal operations.
