Martin Place Siege Memorial

The Lindt Café Siege is a terrible moment that has affected not just Sydney but all of Australia. Tragically, 2 Australians lost their lives during the 16hr standoff between the gunman and Police. The wake of this event saw Australians bound together and Martin Place was turned into a field of flowers by the community to show their unity with those affected.

To honour the lives of those involved The City of Sydney commissioned Architectural Group, Johnson Pilton Walker, to design a Memorial Site in Martin Place. Kerfoot was engaged directly by Johnson Pilton Walker and worked closely with Electrical Consultant, ARUP, and Project Managers, Savills Australia to provide a solution that would highlight the importance of this even in Australia’s history.

The Design created saw of field of flowers being sunk into the existing Martin Place tiles, suspended in time to memorialise those effected. The Electrical component of the works saw Kerfoot installing 6 large spotlights on existing surrounding council Smart Poles. These lights were to turn on with the City Lighting and provide a soft glow on the field.

Kerfoot was engaged to complete a trial of the lighting installation to ensure the lights would give the desired effect. For this trial Kerfoot managed council permits, the delivery and safe storage of plant and material, traffic controlling for the highly populated area. A team of designers, Architects and stake holders replicated the installation of access equipment late at night. The trial was a success with the final design confirmed on the night.

After the success of the trial Kerfoot was engaged for the installation, the install included retro fitted custom brackets to existing council smart light poles to install the directional spot lights to, Connections to the city lighting network to control the lighting along with all testing and commissioning.

Kerfoot worked to a strict timeframe on this project as the city had to unveil the project on the anniversary of the 2014 siege.

The project has been a huge success and the team at Kerfoot are proud to have been a part of such a special project.
