Plasser Rail Yard Development

Project Description

Plasser was looking to extend their existing production facilities and the Kerfoot project team was awarded the electrical services installation for the new Plasser Rail workshop redevelopment.

A huge factory was constructed with a service trench well over 60 metres long for working under and construction of the new trains. Four new power busbar distribution rails were installed with the longest of the busbars being over 80 metres long. Two 50 tonne cranes and a 10 tonne crane were installed requiring over 300 amps.

As the factories power demand was too large for the existing power supply, a new substation was installed. A new 2000A main switch board was installed and the existing main switch board was upgraded to supply power to all existing facilities.

Three new power distribution boards were installed to service all the new welding stations, production offices, new bathroom facilities, lighting, service trenches and hydraulic plant for the new wash down pits.

105 new energy efficient hi bays were installed with a dimmable lighting system to react to the lighting levels outside also new external lighting for all the new carpark areas.

New fibre link from the Telstra network was installed to service the expanding IT needs of Plasser.

Kerfoot also worked with the client to design a new CCTV and access control system to help the client maintain a safe work place as vandalism in the area is quite high. Due to the size of the factory a fibre link was installed between buildings to maintain the CCTV link. A new wireless fire smoke and EWIS system was installed, to cover the new factory floor.

From the ground up there were so many aspects of this project under Kerfoots contract and the team worked very hard to meet all the clients needs with a successful project handed over on time and on budget.

The existing substation was right in the middle of the new buildings foot print, Kerfoot worked with the supply authority to design a new temporary connection to keep the clients power services running while construction took place.
